Well, as much as I fought with summer to stick around a little longer (or forever, for that matter), I lost the battle and the first day of school arrived at last.
Here are my sweet boys dreaming their last dreams of summer before waking up yesterday to an alarm clock, backpacks, lunchboxes, homework, and after-school sports. I think they slept better than I did!
The morning dawned bright and the weather was good. Derek and Evan were up early and ready for their first day of school!
Derek is in third grade and his teacher is Mrs. Pitrone. It is really unbelievable that Derek is in THIRD GRADE! That is the grade I taught when I was pregnant with Derek. I don’t think I ever thought he would actually grow up to be the same age as my students at the time. Now here he is- handsome and sweet, smart and funny. By far the best third grader around (although I may be biased)!
Evan is in first grade and his teacher is Mrs. Carpenter. She was Derek’s teacher in first grade, and it is comforting to have a teacher we know. Mrs. Carpenter is warm and kind- perfect for our nervous little first grader! It kind of killed me a little bit (okay, a lot) to send Evan off to school ALL DAY! I sure missed him at home! It doesn’t get any cuter than that 6-year-old first day of school smile!
Slowly but surely, our school boys are growing up.
The highlight of the first day of school was, of course, their new school shoes. They were so excited about these that they insisted I take a picture. They kept talking about the speed factor and the reflective properties on the shoes. I’m just glad they found some that fit. I can’t believe I have to buy size 3 1/2 shoes for Derek!!
I offered to walk the boys in to their classrooms, but alas, they said they were fine to just be dropped off. Derek even had the nerve to say I could walk him in as long as I didn’t go all the way to his classroom. Is it possible that he is embarrassed for me to walk him to class? It should be against the law for kids to grow up this fast!
Anyway, off they went without their mother holding their hands…
The highlight of the day for the boys may have been sporting their new school shoes, but the highlight of the day for me was seeing these cute faces come back out the school doors at 3:30 in the afternoon…
Sorry about the blurry pictures. I was too busy being excited to see the boys to bother focusing the camera!
I sure love these boys! Life is pretty quiet around the Roper house without them all day. Today was just the second day of school, but I took the younger kids in to volunteer to help with a last minute project and I have to admit that I snuck around and found both of my cute boys! Evan was lining up in the hallway with his class (that was a pure-luck sighting) and got a quick hug from his mom, and Derek didn’t even seem the least bit embarrassed when Adam, Amelia, and I showed up in the lunchroom! Maybe he isn’t too grown up, after all.
I even got extra lucky and happened to spot Derek playing tag with friends on the playground when I pulled up to pick them up from school today (in this crummy iphone picture Derek is escaping down the slide).
Here goes another school year- so far, so good. I hope we can make it a great one!
