Evan had his last field trip of the year last week. I felt a little sad that I didn’t get to chaperone any field trips this year because of lack of babysitting, so Glenn amazingly arranged his work schedule to fly in from a business trip late Thursday night, allowing me to go on the field trip Friday morning.
It was fun to head off to the zoo to be with Evan and his friends!![]()

After all, it doesn’t get much cuter than this, right? You only get to be a first grader once in your life, so you might as well hold hands while walking through the zoo completely at ease with the world.![]()
Evan and I stayed after the school busses took the kids back to school (the benefit of not being an official chaperone). It was fun to see Evan’s personality come through. The field trip drove him crazy while we were with the group because we were rushing from exhibit to exhibit. Evan is a boy who does not like to be rushed. And, he takes after his paternal grandfather in his desire to read every sign and information board posted. We lost him several times because he would wander off to finish reading a sign.
Once the group was gone and it was just Evan and me, he relaxed. I was glad I could provide a few minutes for him to read as much about African Wild Dogs as his little heart desired. We stood and watched the bears splashing around and playing together for probably 10 minutes without anywhere to rush off to. We finally headed to the sea lion demonstration before heading home.![]()
Evan and I were both totally exhausted by the time we arrived home, but I was sure happy! It was so nice to have some time where I could focus on just my favorite first grader!
