I am a Leprechaun

Never in my entire life have I “celebrated” St. Patrick’s Day.  I’ve always seen it as a day when people who like to do mean things feel like they have an excuse to go pinch people.

The past couple of years, however, I have felt increasing pressure thanks to the public school system.  The boys’ teachers tell tales of leprechauns doing naughty tricks and leaving chocolate gold coins.  I personally blame Elf on the Shelf for this change in expectations.  The boys come home thinking the leprechauns are supposed to sneak in and mess up our house.  But really… why on earth would I mess my house up on purpose?

This year St. Patrick’s Day was on Sunday.  When we woke up, we heard Evan say, “Hey Derek- I wonder if the leprechauns came and messed up the house.”  They went downstairs, at which point Derek came and asked us what day it was, double checking that we had, in fact, failed to create fun for them on St. Patrick’s Day.  Evan started making excuses for them.  He first suspected that the leprechauns were still at his friend Grady’s house and they just hadn’t made it to us yet.  Then he predicted that they would come while we were at church.

No way.  Sorry buddy!

After church my heart started to change and I decided that maybe I should make St. Patrick’s Day more fun (but they better not expect it every year).  I convinced Glenn to take Derek and Evan to choir practice so I could work my mischief while they were gone.

The leprechaun didn’t want to have to clean up a big mess, so he just left a sign on their door, turned a few pictures upside down in their room, and took all the green books off their bookshelf and scattered them on the floor (I wish I could say the green clothes on the floor and unmade beds were from the leprochauns, but the boys did that themselves).  Not the most exciting leprechaun antics and no gold coins, but it was something at least.

Then I peeked into Adam’s room where he had been quietly reading books.  He had fallen asleep on his chair.

That is when my inner Irish kicked in.  A light bulb turned on in my head and I was suddenly giddy.

I ran downstairs.  I got a green marker, and I drew a mustache on Adam’s face.  Unfortunately, the tickling sensation made him move his head so it is hard to see, but it’s there!

Watching the boys’ reaction was priceless.  They were mildly excited about their room, but the mustache was a hit!  It was almost enough to make me want to play leprechaun again next year.  Almost.  We’ll have to wait and see if anyone falls asleep!

Rolling

I’m a little behind on this, but Amelia rolled over once for the first time about a month ago, then stopped.  On February 12th she resumed rolling and has done it ever since (only front to back).

Hmmm…. not sure she likes this tummy time.  Here she goes!Rolling 1

Orange Run

Last week Glenn’s parents came out for the time I look forward to all year- the Orange Run.  They live in the Central Valley of California where farmers grow (according to NPR) a quarter of the food America eats.  Every year Glenn’s parents fill their truck with boxes of oranges and make the drive to deliver them to those of us who live in a less fortunate climate.  They stop in Provo and then head on to Denver, and every year I look forward to seeing that truck pull up- it’s like Santa’s sleigh!

We had a great time with them!  I was too busy eating the juicy oranges to take many pictures (which I always regret after the fact).  I wish I had more documentation of our fun, but I guess I’ll just have to record it here.

Grandpa took Derek to get a new front door for our house (which we still have to finish and install, so no pictures yet).  He took the kids to the park to fly kites.  Both Grandma and Grandpa took the kids on walks, even out in the cold, snowy weather.  The boys love to go walking outside and I am just a huge wimp when it comes to the cold, so I don’t take them out very often.  They were pretty happy about being out and about!  Glenn’s parents were kind enough to let me record them for hours telling stories about our family history that I plan show our kids on Sunday afternoons.  Glenn’s mom helped me sew curtains for our bedroom.  You can see why we all love it when they come!

We celebrated Valentines Day together.  The door decorations were a lot fancier with Glenn’s mom here!  Glenn’s dad took the boys to Target to get me a present- new drinking glasses (inspired by all the cracked plastic cups we typically use)!

Our kids love their grandparents, and I think they’re pretty great, too!

Here is Amelia enjoying her orange. You can see her reaction when I tried to suggest that we should give it to someone who could actually eat it!

The boys have enjoyed more than just eating the oranges…

Now we’re slowly savoring our delicious oranges to make them last as long as we can until the much anticipated visit next year!
